Domain Names

Negociating the Domain Name minefield

A domain name is the address that people will type into their browsers to reach your website.

Domain names end in an extension, for instance .com or .net, .org, .biz. So myname.com is not the same as myname.net. You should probably use a .com domain name, since that is the extension that your clients will be most familiar with.

If your name is not common, firsnameLastname.com can be a good choice. You might also want a domain name that is the same as your email address. For instance, if your name is Marilyn Hill, you might have drMarilynHill.com as your domain name, and marilyn@drMarilynHill.com for a business email address. It is a simple task since one or more email accounts come with your website.

Domain names are not case sensitive, so marilyn@drmarilymiller.com is the same as Marilyn@drMarilynMiller.com. Written that way, it is easier for your clients to remember your website address when they tell their friends and family about you.
